Content Selection in Comparison Generation

Comparisons are prominent in textual descriptions. In particular, when describing an entity to a listener, comparison is a useful tool for relating new information to concepts which are known to the hearer. This paper describes the use of comparison in the generation of descriptions, and presents a strategy for selecting the most salient properties which liken or distinguish the entities being compared. The results are demonstrated in peba{ii, a natural language generation system which produces hypertext descriptions of animals.
